Circulating tumor cells may predict prognosis in early breast cancer

submitted by: mdanderson
A study published in the June Lancet Oncology reports early stage breast cancer patients who produce circulating tumor cells (CTC) may be at greater risk for breast cancer recurrence. Until now, lymph node biopsy has been the best predictor of prognosis. More research is needed to learn how to apply this new discovery, but the study is a step forward in understanding what is happening biologically. Anthony Lucci, M.D., professor, and Isabelle Bedrosian, M.D., associate professor, both in...

Science Nation - Body Rhythms and Breast Cancer

submitted by: nsf
Could working the night shift alter a woman's body clock enough to cause breast cancer? "One minute you're a healthy person, the next minute you have breast cancer." Ettamay (last name withheld) is up early these days. She lives a much different life than she did when she was a nurse working the night shifts. She would be just getting to sleep at this early morning hour. "I was always exhausted," she says. "I don't know any of the nurses, especially the night shift gals, that weren't...

Whole Blueberry Powder Modulates the Growth and Metastasis of MDA-MB-231 Triple Negative Breast Tumors in Nude Mice

submitted by: Stedda68
Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrated that blueberry (BB) extract exhibited antitumor activity againstMDA-MB-231 triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and decreased metastatic potential in vitro. The current study tested 2 doses of whole BB powder, 5 and 10% (wt:wt) in the diet, against MDA-MB-231 tumor growth in female nude mice. In this study, tumor volume was 75%lower in mice fed the 5%BB diet and 60% lower in mice fed the 10%BB diet than in control mice (P # 0.05)....

Identification and Regulation of c-Myb Target Genes in MCF-7 cells.

submitted by: aquintan
BACKGROUND: The c-Myb transcription factor regulates differentiation and proliferation in hematopoietic cells, stem cells and epithelial cells. Although oncogenic versions of c-Myb were first associated with leukemias, over expression or rearrangement of the c-myb gene is common in several types of solid tumors, including breast cancers. Expression of the c-myb gene in human breast cancer cells is dependent on estrogen stimulation, but little is known about the activities of the c-Myb...
